Five year old confidence!!

Amelia as been five for a bit over two months now and we've already noticed some really strong themes. While she remains the intense fiercely independent child she has been since birth, she's also become MUCH happier in general, exudes a certain confidence, and is social and bubbly in a way she never has been before. She has morphed from the 1 year old who held a hand out to stop any child from even coming close, saying "I NEED MY SPACE" to a 2 and 3 year old suspicious of or dismissive of other children to a 4 year old totally wrapped up in how no one liked her, she could do nothing right, etc....to a 5 year old who is now getting in trouble for being too social, talkative - you should see all the time outs she got in her swim class for tickling the 4 boys in her class under the water! It's fun and interesting.

I thought a few snapshots would show this new Amelia perfectly. You might remember my pictures of Amelia over the years - she's always looked incredibly intense in pictures. Do you recognize this girl? The non-positive pictures I get of her now are of her rolling her eyes at me, which she does constantly, but a typical picture of my 5 year old looks like this:

Do you notice the cocked hip, the "I'm so cool" shift to the shoulders, the half-raised eyebrow? Seriously! A possible explanation is certainly that she is just so excited about all these changes that she's living life to the fullest right now...but I have to say, I love 5 year olds!!!

Move Update #3

I must do periodic move updates so you all can get why I seem so absent. Moving countries seems to have quite a repressive effect on my online time.

Last time I did a move update, were were finally in our apartment, we had tenants living in our house, and we were prepared to start enjoying Seattle summer before heading out. Speaking of our house, we drove by this weekend and paused for a minute. Amelia sighed and said "Do you ever think our house looks like a bird that's missing its family?"

The following are the major activities since the last Move Update:

1. Camping weekent at Mt Rainier....with NINE children and seven adults. It was honestly a ton of fun. Oliver raced around becoming a dark ruddy shade of dirt, Amelia collected piles of rocks, pine cones, and other assorted organic material, and at other times paused to do this:

And of course some healthy eye-rolling at her mother:

We got a chance to hike into snow on Mt Rainier (by "hike" read: push children over into snow and throw snowballs at them; laugh; repeat), throw rocks into a fast-moving glacier run-off river (the adults called it "The River of Death" and didn't let the kids within 5 feet), eat roasted marshmallows, sleep in a tent (my children, may I add, were consistently up TWO HOURS after all the other children had happily collapsed into camping-filled dreams), and just sit around and talk while the children ran as feral as possible in a very close-quarters car-camping campground.

2. Amelia went for her last weekend with Bubbe in Oregon, after Bubbe came up to Seattle to spend a few days with Oliver and then drive her down. Bubbe and Oliver had a lot of fun together, including playing soccer for an hour on a huge regulation-size soccer field in the blazing son. Then Amelia got to have a wonderful week at one of her favorite places, spending quality time with her favorite chicken "Snow," swimming in the (not Death) river near Bubbe's house, and playing with her many neighborhood friends down there. I have to add that Amelia was delighted to receive an American Girl doll from Bubbe, Kaya, who she's played with continuously since then. While down there she also read Sisters Grimm #3, Harry Potter #2, Series of Unfortunate Events #7, and five Kaya American Girl books.

3. I headed off to New Orleans for a poorly-timed but essential business trip to a conference. Mary and Oliver enjoyed a solo week together with tons of streetcar-riding and adventuring around Seattle. I did a lot of work focused on my next job in Europe and really got a ton out of the conference. But it was hard to be away for one of our last few weeks!!

4. The Day of the Heinous Drive - due to my poor planning, I had to drive down to Oregon to get Amelia (7 hours round trip), drive to West Seattle to get Oliver (he had gone for a quick visit to Grandma and Grandpa), drive to South Lake Union to get Mary and our luggage, then we all drove out to Lake Chelan together for a long-planned trip with friends (a further 3.5 hours). All in all 13 hours in the car. Enough said.

5. Weekend at Lake Chelan - I had vague memories of Lake Chelan from age 4 and was excited to see it again. The kids had a great time, staying in a vacation house with their friends, swimming at the lake, and even spending a half-day at a waterpark. I loved having the time with our friends (we're on a "Get Sick of Each Other" plan which isn't working). One of my highlights though was swimming out to the dock with Amelia and then jumping off the high parts together. The lake is incredibly deep, and I was so proud of her bravery swimming through the waves out to the dock and then leaping off repeatedly. I told her how much fun it is to have a big kid.

6. The two weeks of farewell lunches/breakfasts/dinners....this started last Monday and has been a whirlwind but wonderful to see so many people we love. We also did a baseball game yesterday, paddleboats Saturday, and Mary and the kids did the Space Needle and rode "The Duck" tourist bus/boat last week. Mary and Amelia made a list of things to do before moving, and we've all made amazing progress! It's also in the 90's here, which has made outdoor activities fun but exhausting and has made sleeping in our muggy no-air-conditioning apartment very challenging.

COUNTDOWN!

Mary and the kids are only here Monday through Friday this week, then fly out to Virginia on Saturday. In the interim Nana will come for a few days and we have a ton more goodbye dinners. I stay for an additional week and then join them, then we all head to the UK on August 14.

Drum roll!

Why taxis are yellow

Yesterday as we were zipping along on our car, Oliver exclaimed that he saw a white taxi, which he clearly found hilarious. I idly asked the kids why they thought taxis were yellow. Oliver said:

"Taxis are yellow because they're yellow but they're white."

Um. Helpful. So then I asked Amelia, who tore her gaze away from her book long enough to say the following:

"Well, I've noticed that most of the people who take taxis are people with lighter skin, so I think that's why they made taxis a lighter color."

I mumbled to Mary "Let's call that divergent thinking" since we were both wincing from what sounded racist-ish. Except as we discussed we decided to frame it as ethnographic observational skills. Odd, right?

Squeezing summer fun out of Seattle

Not that it's hard to squeeze summer fun out of Seattle....we've just really been focusing this year. You may have noticed I've done a dismal job updating the blog recently. Take that theme and apply it across all segments of my life and you'll get a feel for a bit of chaos as we prepare to move to another country for multiple years!

We wanted the kids to really enjoy the last summer they have in Seattle for a while. We've been camping, off on a weekend trip to a lake, spending time with friends in the area who they will miss...and we've been blessed by a summer of non-stop gorgeous weather. Mary and Amelia made a list a couple of weeks ago of things they absolutely must do before leaving and are steadily working away at it. The countdown is really on now - there is only ONE more weekend before Mary and the kids leave Seattle (to spend some time in Virginia).

So here we have a brief montage of summer fun in Seattle, "Leaving the Country Soon" style.

Loving her horse riding lessons

Nothing like relaxing in a hammock....

Enjoying the fountain at the Seattle Center

Wading pool action!

Hiking in the snow on a Mt Rainier camping weekend

Lazy camping Oliver
Amelia by Seattle's "gum wall" which she adored of course

Eating mountains of seafood together

MOVE update #2

Let's see...what has happened since the last (and first) move update? For one, we sorted through 6 years of household accumulation including owning our first home and the births and babyhoods of both of our children, plus less sentimental items including absurd numbers of packages of Top Ramen discovered in a storage space, lots of hideous shirts of unknown origin, and many many cat toys discovered under furniture. We haven't bought the cats any toys since the children were born, when we discovered they are more fun to buy presents for (and we no longer have to suffer through pervasive jingling all night long), so those were some antique cat toys.

Anyway, what have we accomplished?
1. Sorted an entire house into "Sea" (sea shipment, heading across the Panama canal for 6 weeks), "Air" (stuff we'll need for the last 6 weeks in Seattle), "Storage" (very small pile left in our basement), and "Yard Sale" with appropriate stickers applied. The first three were provided by the moving company; Amelia set up a sweatshop and made dozens of "Yard Sale" tags by herself. Here are some examples of massive piles of stuff ready to go:

2. Entertained a crowd of movers (Mary, while I was at work) while keeping track of children and making sure things went in the correct piles. The movers first said 3 days, revised down to 2 days in the pre-move survey when they saw we didn't fit into the typical 4-person American family house size (gasp! Only a 2-bed, 1-bath!), and then ended up taking less than 6 hours. They commended us on how organized and prepared we were - all credit here goes to Mary!

3. Moved our own stuff to our temporary furnished apartment. We now live in the South Lake Union neighborhood. It's really fun to have the opportunity to explore a new neighborhood while being within the same city. The kids are delighted by the huge playground across the street, and given the tiny size of the apartment we spend a ton of time there! Amelia continues with her stigmati-building obsession with monkey bars at the new playground. And the kids are treated like spectacles as there are very few of them in this area - many more young hip urbanites. Here are some pictures of the kids being "urban."

Playing around with some public art outside the nearby Whole Foods (after one trip I now drive 3x as far to pay 1/3 as much)

Amelia showing off a new Amelia-esque pose at their newly beloved playground across the street.

Shopping together at the neighborhood weekly farmers market.

Taking in the fountain scene after attending the pride parade and festival.

4. The big yard sale came next. We held it on a blazing hot day (my birthday!) to coincide with a pretty cool antique/hot rod car show they have in our neighborhood every year. This leads to a lot more traffic in the neighborhood. We managed to get everything out by the allotted time, although I was unwilling to spend an hour applying prices to everything, so I just put out 5 sheets and had a $10, $5, $1, 25 cent, and free pile. The aforementioned Top Ramen went in the free pile and made some people very happy. The traffic, nice day, and of course my winning salesmanship led to a lot of good sales. I would say that almost everything that had true value did sell, with the exception of some nice enough sweaters. On a hot day no one can consider buying sweaters! At the end of the day Mary bundled the remainder up into a large pile for a thrift store.

5. Here is where my hat really goes off to Mary. After getting the entire house sorted into appropriate piles, including hours of work, she then took over entirely as soon as we moved to the apartment. It was time to get the house ready for our wonderful new tenants! We were very lucky to find the perfect tenants, or rather they found us. They even want the house for the full 3 years we'll be gone. They seem to adore the house like we do, and they're really excited to be living there, to take care of it and the yard, and to really enjoy it. YAY! Anyway, Mary worked all weekend, then every weekday following that until the 1st, starting her shift at 6pm when I got home and usually getting back to the apartment at midnight.

Getting the house ready, though, was a TON of work. Mary repainted all of the rooms, many with two coats in areas where we'd hung a lot of art or there had been fading/staining. She cleaned and cleaned and cleaned some more. She sorted through all the detritus of which there was a LOT. She did countless dump runs, fixed clogged sinks, replaced hardware on some cabinets, basically all of those things that you think "Hmm, I should get around to that" but then never do. She could barely walk as of July 1!

So now we're happy tenants in our apartment and we have happy tenants in our house. It's not 100% smooth sailing - sometimes the apartment seems a bit...cramped...and we definitely miss our house at times. But we're enjoying all the fun changes and trying to take advantage of the remainder of summer we have here. In fact, we're heading off camping for the long weekend...but I suggested and then insisted that Mary stay home to recuperate from the endless hours of hard labor. Going camping with this group (7 adults, 9 children 2-5) may not be the most relaxing!

Flashback time!!

We had a great playdate with Amelia's former nanny (ages 6 months to 22 months) and her sons in June. I've just been going through pictures for the month of June and was delighted to find this picture of Amelia and her nanny's older son sitting together in the sandbox:

Now check out THIS picture from Amelia's first birthday of the same two kids sitting together in a sandbox!!
